"The first thing I played was a Beethoven rondo," says pianist Sergei
Babayan. "I don't remember, my sisters told me The first music I
do remember playing was Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 Musically
gifted children like it because of that big opening chord."

Thousands of hours of practice later, Babayan, 31 has made his mark
on the international music circuit. He left the Soviet Union in 1989
